All our lives, we’ve searched for that speedy and ultra-easy makeup trick that could instantly give our face a fresh glow and youthful boost of energy. Ladies, that trick is right here and you can rest assured, magic truly does exist.

This insanely popular and simple makeup trick is termed as contrasting, and even science has revealed that women who experiment with this trendy makeup technique tend to appear much younger. Frontiers in Psychology conducted a remarkable study that involved observers examining the facial photos of several women between the ages of 20-80, and ranging from four different ethnic orientations. The observers were shown two versions of each image, one image was edited with high contrast, while the other one was edited with low contrast.

The results revealed that nearly 80% of the time, the observes described the facial photos with high contrast as much younger-looking as opposed to the images with low-contrast, despite the fact the two photos were of the same woman.

The researchers explain that individuals from all the various different cultures denote different meanings and age perceptions from facial contrast, and even though this is not done purposefully or intentionally. Contrasting is an art that allows people to reduce the effects of aging from their facial features and alter how they look.

According to Aurélie Porcheron, the author of the study,

“People of different cultures use facial contrast as a cue for perceiving age from the face, even though they are not consciously aware of it. The results also suggest that people could actively modify how old they look, by altering how much their facial features stand out, for example, by darkening or colouring their features.”

In order to be specific, the researchers used the term facial contrast to refer to the extent the lips, eyebrows and eyes were highlighted and made to stand out from the rest of the face. As our body and skin begins to age, these facial features tend to become less and less prominent.

But with a few simple makeup tricks, you can really make your eyes, lips and eyebrows pop and give your face a youthfully vibrant appearance.
